Thanks to kilometres of beachfront, stretches of undulating olive trees and its decidedly relaxed vibe, it offers the sun-kissed, laid-back lifestyle many are searching for.

Where is Salento in Italy?

First things first, let’s clear up any doubts you may have. If you look at a standard map, you won’t find a single town, village or island called “Salento”. The name actually refers to an area within Puglia (one of Italy’s 20 regions). But if you look at this map you’ll see exactly where it is. A peninsula between two seas, the Adriatic and the Ionian, with wonderful beaches and treasures to discover inland. In short, holidays to Salento, Italy promise to be full of beautiful surprises!

How to get to Salento, Italy

The best way for many is by airplane. In recent years, the number of flights has increased and Puglia is now well connected to international hubs like Paris and Munich. 

Brindisi is the nearest airport to Salento, Italy, but you could also fly into Bari and then rent a car, which you might want to do anyway - it’s the best way to get around. Where to go in Salento, Italy

This really comes down to what you prefer, but these are the main urban centers in Salento. Each one has its own distinct identity, but they’re all equally stunning.

Lecce

This elegant town is often referred to as the “Florence of the South” and if you stroll along its Baroque alleys, lined with palazzos with decadent facades you’ll understand why. The town’s unique mix of culture, architecture and dolce vita will enchant you for sure.

Gallipoli

Rooted in Ancient Greek history, this white town juts into the turquoise sea and it’s nicknamed “città bella” (beautiful town) for a reason. Don’t skip a visit to the fish market for extra-fresh seafood you can eat right away.

Otranto

A beautiful town lapped by turquoise sea, with ancient walls and castle as well as a romantic promenade. Its vibrant restaurant scene is also another reason for visiting this charming town.

Nardò

We couldn’t leave it out, considering that’s where we’re based! The main square, Piazza Salandra, steals the scene, with its opulent Baroque elegance and pastel-colored touches here and there but the nearby beaches and coastline are another reason to love this hidden gem of a town.

Museums in Lecce

There are 12 museums in Lecce and these include the ruins of the Roman amphitheater. Most museums focus on archeology but there are some exceptions, like the rail museum and one dedicated to local folklore and traditions.

Castles

You don’t need a royal invitation to enjoy the many ancient castles here in Salento. Take your pick among the one in Nardò, Copertino, Otranto, Gallipoli, Lecce and Corigliano d'Otranto or even better, visit them all!

Bauxite quarry

Water, rock and sky orchestrated in a perfect symphony at this former quarry, a place of otherworldly beauty.

Punta Palascìa

In the easternmost point of Italy, the lighthouse of Punta Palascìa is perched on a rocky cliff, making it the perfect backdrop for photos.

Isola dei Conigli

If you look up the definition of breathtaking, this island is what you’ll get. White cliffs, deep blue sea and the utmost quiet, what’s not to like?

Grotta della Zinzulusa

You’ll feel part of an ancient Greek legend as you enter this spectacular cave, which you can only reach by sea.

Torre Guaceto

Unspoilt natural beauty at this protected area with a white sandy beach that’s well worth the trek to reach.

Go to beach

This is what Salento is famous for! Here you’ll find some of the finest beaches you’ve ever seen. Think long stretches of white sand, imposing cliffs and turquoise sea. Punta Prosciutto, Porto Selvaggio and Pescoluse are only a few of the many amazing beaches you can find here.

Trekking in Salento

Relaxing at the beach isn’t the only thing you can do in Salento. There are plenty of trails you can explore on foot and the best thing is the inviting deep blue sea waiting for you, a refreshing end to your trek! The Canale delle Menghe or the Sentiero Belvedere, for example, are great itineraries in this area.

Go on a wine tour

Primitivo and Negroamaro are some of the most famous exports, but there many more wines you can taste here in Puglia. Visiting vineyards is one of the best ways to learn about Puglia wines or you can take advantage of the many food tours available that pair local delicacies to local wine.
