20 tips to live more sustainably in the new decade

Now that Christmas and New Years are over, the leftovers all finished, let's hear it, what are your New Year's resolutions? Are the usual suspects in there, getting in shape, saving more and so on?

These are all well and good, but have you considered adding some that affect those beyond yourself?

If you've been thinking about taking on a more sustainable lifestyle, now is a good time to start getting more eco-friendly in your daily life.

How, we hear you ask. Well, our sustainability tips below are definitely an excellent primer and if you want more, come to our sustainable retreats in Puglia!

Embrace seasonal living

For many of us living in cities, the change in seasons often means a shopping spree to get outfitted for the new season or a longer commute to get to work because of the weather. Artificial lights make our days longer, radiators keep us warm and going even when the temperatures drop below zero; this means that we’re often out of sync with the natural cycle. A more mindful approach to the changing seasons, however, can not only make you feel better but also help you respect the environment.

Sustainability tips for Winter

Shorter days, less sunlight and cold weather make us feel sluggish and therefore less inclined to make an effort, which is why it’s important to prepare in advance. It’ll be easier to stay the course if you’ve got all the foundations laid out in the fall. This way you’ll only have to pay attention to a couple of things, like the ones below!

  • Bundle up before turning on the heat.

Put on that old cardigan! Those wool socks your grandma made you? Wear them! Layers are your friends. This decision will benefit the environment and reduce your energy bill (and who doesn’t like that?).

  • Choose your candles wisely.

After a day spent in the cold, coming home and lighting a candle is a blissful luxury. Unfortunately most candles on sale are made from paraffin wax, which isn’t earth-friendly at all. A better option? A beeswax candle made from a local artisan, so there’s no need for shipping (not so great for the environment either).

  • Have a Merry Green Christmas!

If you can, rent a real tree and swap your old lights for LED lights (or do without!). Wrap your gifts with recycled paper like old newspapers and magazines and use twine instead of tape.

Sustainability tips for Spring

A season of rebirth, where we finally get to go out more. It’s a hive of activity, to prepare for those lazy, hazy Summer days ahead. Here are some tips to be eco-friendly this season too!

  • Non-toxic Spring cleaning.

Make your own cleaning products or opt for eco-friendly options, they’re now easily available everywhere and cheaper than you think. (Vinegar or baking soda for example provide the base for great cleaning solutions)

  • Curtain call!

As the days become longer, let that sunshine in! Remember to open your blinds rather than switch on the lights when possible. If you don’t have a lot of windows in your home, place mirrors strategically to amplify the light in your rooms.

Sustainability tips for Summer

Long sunny days at the beach or enjoying the outdoors, BBQ, vacations - how not to love Summer? Even if all you want is relaxing, still try and make a small effort for the environment!

  • Turn off the A/C as often as possible.

You’ll be surprised how easily you can adjust and put up with the warmer temperatures if you refrain from using A/C unless absolutely necessary.

  • Ditch the ice cream tubs.

Opt for a gelato cone instead, less disposable plastic.

  • Wear non-toxic sunscreen

Did you know that a lot of sunscreens contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, chemicals that harm coral reefs? Try to find a lotion that avoids using them.

Sustainability tips for Fall

All sugar, pumpkin spice and everything nice, including you! Be kinder towards the environment by following these tips!

  • Still driving? Check your tires.

Make sure the air pressure is ok for total fuel efficiency.

  • Insulate your home

Prepare for winter and reduce heat loss as much as you can.

  • Don’t blow it!

Rake up those leaves and use them for compost instead.

Household sustainability tips

It starts at home. Don’t underestimate what you can do, even a small change can have a big impact! Here are a few ideas you can implement right away.

  • Eat seasonally and locally.

It’s better for you and the environment. Italians know good food and do you think it’s a coincidence they’re one of the countries with the highest number of 100-year olds? Try and buy produce that’s in season and grown near where you live. This way you’ll help create a critical mass to limit greenhouses and unnecessary imports.

20 tips to live more sustainably in the new decade 3

Regularly prepare home-cooked meals.

Reduce food waste and disposable materials. We share a few delicious ideas on our sustainable retreats in Puglia.

  • Grow your own herbs, fruit, and vegetables.

Even if it’s just one pot with basil, it still counts! With hydroponics systems, you can grow plants even in tiny spaces nowadays.

  • Use less aluminum foil and Saran wrap.

Opt for glass containers instead and reusable food wraps.

Sustainable self-care

More than ever now we’re aware of how self-care is important for us human beings. This is at the core of the experiences we offer here At The Aia. You don’t have to wait and come to Puglia, though, to have more balance in your life, just start with the tips below!

  • Make your own self-care products.

This is something we teach during our sustainable retreats and our guests are always surprised at how easy it actually is to create a high-quality product. Did you know you can even make your toothpaste? Give it a try!

  • Put your phone away.

Schedule in regular digital detoxes. Whether it’s just 1 hour on Sundays or a week-long vacation, it’s important to disconnect and to enjoy some time away from screens.

Daily sustainability tips

We’re all superheroes, didn’t you know? We all have the power of habit! It’s a formidable superpower that can shape our future. Just pick the right habit and you’re all set!

  •    Drive less, walk and cycle more.

During our sustainable retreats in Puglia we try and avoid using the car as much as possible. We go on hikes and bike tours with our guests, as it’s also one of the best ways to discover Puglia. You can do the same back at home too!

  • Always have your kit ready.

Bring reusable water bottles, straws, grocery bags, and coffee cups wherever you go.

One last tip? Take an eco-friendly vacation this year, like our sustainable retreats in Puglia.
