Life at the aia during a global pandemic: Phase Two
Fifty-five days later- proves that time is this kind of strange illusion. In someways it feels like it was just one long week and and in some ways it feels like life before quarantine never really happened. The common feeling as of yet is waiting for the second shoe to drop. Which makes me wonder if we have a hard time accepting what is good? Seems like most people are waiting to get closed in again- more isolation. I don’t feel that this will happen, but its clear the Covid crisis is far from over. What may or may not happen one things for sure, this freedom is wonderful. There’s always been a sense of “confusion” in Italian culture- I think of it more as a philosophy- as lets face it, nothing is linear, not even cuing-up at the supermarket. But maybe I feel this way because I myself am Italian. Whatever the case may be, there is a collective confusion in the air in general. We are allowed to move about for four reasons and four reasons only:
for work,
absolutely urgent,
a situation of necessity and lastly,
health related reasons.
We see the enormous gray area that exists between these four points don’t we? The collective joke transcending north, south, east, west and Italy’s 20 regions has been the word “Congiunti” and the massive ambiguity that resides within this word. We are able to travel to our kin, thus family and/or significant others. But who exactly are our significant others? Clearly the most important aspect of “La fase due” (the second phase) is taking precautions and keeping social distance, continuing to wear a mask, continually washing hands, etc. But for us here At The Aia, within a five minute drive and not a minute more we are here, and there is really nothing in the world we need more than this. The sea and the sunshine!
The plan as of now is to open the Sheahan countries on the the 15th of June. With regard to travel bans and the United States its hard to say, but I’m accepting all my American clients back as soon as they can possibly come!
