If there are two art forms that are entrenched in Southern Italian Culture, they are the art of manipulating terracotta and the art of cooking. This week is designed to get your hands dirty - whether in the clay or in the dough- both are made to be transformed from something simple to unforgettable.
Ceramics is one of Italy’s oldest art forms. Terracotta literally means cooked terra, of the earth itself. Italians are known in quality pieces that last for generations, which is why you will see many kitchens (including the one at The Aia) full of ceramic plates, bowls, and mugs. With daily ceramics classes from a local ceramics’ expert, you will learn how to manipulate the clay into something not only beautiful but also practical.
Italy is known for its food with every 20 of the regions having its own specialty dish and story. Puglia is known for its farming culture. Much of Pugliese cooking comes from ancient agrarian living where people cultivated the land and would eat what they had harvested. The Southern Italian sun and iron rich soil produce food that is simple, yet spectacular. Add a little olive oil or some local cheese and you can transform an ordinary vegetable into a mouth-watering dish. Join one of our daily cooking classes and learn the art of Southern Italian cooking.
In addition to the 6 gastronomy and ceramics classes, some of the highlights of this experience include a 90-minute tour of Lecce as well as both wine tasting at Idomeneo and gelato tasting at Baldo.

Enrico is a native to Lecce, Puglia and will be our teacher as he guides us through the art of transforming terra-cotta to beautiful objects, we can take home. Enrico is a self-thought artesian of pottery making and has been so since the age of 25. In his words “poetry making is like yoga for the hands, calms the mind and brings us fully into the present moment”.
What you can expect is an experienced chef who has mastery over authentic Pugliese cuisine and has a love for the art of teaching. Come get your hands dirty as you dive into the rich history of Italian cooking. The best part? After class everyone sits outside around the table to enjoy the meal you just learned how to prepare!
